What is a Wiki?

A wiki (IPA: [ˈwɪ.kiː] <WICK-ee> or [ˈwiː.kiː] <WEE-kee>[1]) is a website that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change available content, typically without the need for registration. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring. The term wiki also can refer to the collaborative software itself (wiki engine) that facilitates the operation of such a Web site, or to certain specific wiki sites, including the computer science site (the original wiki) WikiWikiWeb and on-line encyclopedias such as Wikipedia.

How do I create a Wiki Page?

Wiki pages on the IC Collabration site are a free form development environment where everyone with the proper authorization can freely create and edit these web pages. Wiki pages can be used for internal collaboration or for communicating outside the corporate firewall without the need for a website developer as the edit function is in a MS word format.

Another definition is: a web page that is part of a WIKI system. Such page has the characteristic of being editable by any browser and its content can therefore be changed by the web users.

To create a page from an existing page:

  1. First open the edit function for the page where you want the new wiki page to link from.
  2. Create a page title and use the following format guidlelines

One or more capitalized words stuck together and surrounded by double brackets [[  ]] is a wiki word.
Wiki words (with double brackets on either end): Avalanche,  HomePage, ThreeWordsTogetherNot wiki words: IBM, School, [[wikiTime]]Each wiki word refers to a wiki page within this topic. If you place a wiki word in your document that corresponds to an existing wiki page, it will be linked accordingly. If the wiki word refers to a wiki page that does not exist yet, it will linked to a page where that wiki page can be created.
  3. Submit the page edit.
  4. When the page you have just edited comes back, go to the page title and click on the question mark, this will open the new page and it will be ready for content and editing.
  5. Now you have a new wiki page!
